What Japan’s primary data says

Japan Customs reports a category in which powdered green tea includes matcha, but it is not a matcha-only series. We preserve that distinction instead of presenting the category total as matcha sales.

01

Calendar 2024

¥36.4B

Japanese green tea export value

8,798 metric tons; both value and volume were record highs in the series described by Osaka Customs.

Hisa buyer note

Export demand is no longer a niche signal. Wholesale buyers should expect origin, production capacity, and replenishment terms to matter alongside cup quality.

02

January–October 2025

¥44.6B

Powdered green tea export value

6,889 metric tons. This customs category includes matcha and other powdered green tea.

Hisa buyer note

The category's value in ten months exceeded the prior year's total value for all green tea exports; cafe buyers should qualify supply continuity before adding a permanent menu item.

03

January–October 2025

>80%

Share of green tea export value

Powdered green tea represented more than four-fifths of total green tea export value and was about twice the year-earlier level.

Hisa buyer note

Demand pressure is concentrated in powder. A supplier evaluation should document the exact lot and product specification, not rely on the word “matcha” alone.

04

2024 crop year

66,900 t

Japan crude tea production

Production across the principal prefectures declined 2% from the previous crop year.

Hisa buyer note

This is a broad tea-supply indicator, not a matcha production count. It belongs in the context layer rather than being used as a direct matcha-availability claim.

Evidence policy

How we verify the numbers

We use primary Japanese government releases, preserve each source's category definition and reporting period, and attach every displayed number to the source rows that support it. Hisa interpretation is labeled separately from the reported fact. Figures are rechecked before a new weekly article can publish.

  1. 01 Start with a government release or a first-party operating record.
  2. 02 Preserve the source’s unit, date range, and category boundary.
  3. 03 Separate the reported fact from Hisa’s buyer interpretation.
  4. 04 Block weekly publication if any numerical statement lacks support.
